At about 2.8 miles into the hike, you will see this view. You are looking at Hookio Ridge... this ridge runs down the middle of Maunelei Gulch. If you look closely (see circle) you can see notches that have been cut into this ridge. These notches were cut by Lana'i warriors to build "forts" to try and hold off an invading party from the Big Island. It didn't work. The invaders, eventually, ransacked the island of Lana'i.
