There seems to be a lot of misinformation about the Munro Trail on the island of Lana'i. We decided to post this guide in order to give potential hikers a little better idea of exactly what to expect on the hike. If you want to hike the entire trail, you can plan on a good half to 3/4 day of hiking... depending on stops and your pace. From "marker to marker" the trail is just under 10 miles long. You will start at an elevation of about 1,800 feet and hike to the very top of the island at about 3,300 feet. For those who do not hike on a regular basis, it can be a fairly strenuous hike... definitely not for those who are not prepared with proper gear and plenty of water. Hikers should be prepared with layers of clothing that can be taken off or added as needed. Conditions along the trail can alternate from tropical, sunny warmth to very cool, overcast weather. Hikers should have a water proof jacket for the possibility of rain at the top. It is best to begin the hike at the South end (nearest Manele Bay) and hike toward the Koele Lodge... this way you finish in "civilization". But since many people choose to begin the hike at the Koele Lodge, this guide describes the hike beginning at the North end. Click on the thumbnails below for a view-by-view description of what you will encounter along the trail. If you would like, we can provide a personalized guided hike of the Munro Trail.
